Vok Toothtaker

Vok Toothtaker was a hobgoblin barber, sailor and mercenary best known for wearing the teeth of his enemies (and choice friends). He had an exceptionally thorough knowledge of humanoid anatomy gained through "practical experience." By disposition he was philosophical - when asked whether his trophies had belonged to victims or patients, he often asked, "What's the difference?" He was an old shipmate of Ka-Ess, with whom he sailed on the Barrel-Chested Lady. After Ka-Ess became part-owner of the Satisfied Fishwife, Toothtaker came aboard as ship's surgeon.

Personality

Toothtaker was generally described as dour, although he was also a hobgoblin of considerable intelligence and would on rare occasion evince a remark of great esprit. His life as a surgeon and sailor had revealed to him the low value generally placed on individual life. His own career existed only because magical healing was generally considered too expensive and inconvenient for crew and troops. A sawbones was sufficient to treat minor injuries, and in the case of serious ones, death could still sometimes be prevented; in any case, sailors and soldiers leave few mourners, and more can always be acquired. Consequently, he was not generally susceptible to appeals to the value of life or the sanctity of the spirit. In his late-night pipe-sessions with Ka-Ess, he would generally play pessimist to Ka-Ess' transcendentalist.
